5-HTP is a supplement that’s often been used to help treat depression. It does this by increasing serotonin levels and making it easier for your brain to access it. Serotonin has a calming, soothing and uplifting effect on you mood. More recently though, it’s been recognized as a powerful weight loss supplement.

How it Works

5-HTP helps you lose weight mainly by decreasing your appetite and helping you feel fuller and satisfied much quicker than you normally would. Serotonin is naturally produced in your body. You just continue to eat.

Study #1

In one one study on the effects of 5-HPT, the women who participated noted that they were eating far less carbs. This wasn’t on purpose. In fact, it wasn’t until afterward that they realized they were doing so. Women in the study who took Garcinia lost 10 lbs in only 12 weeks, while those who took a placebo only lost 2lbs. All of the women who were given 5-HTP reported that they felt satisfied early.

Study #2

In another 12-week, placebo-controlled study, women were free to eat as they pleased for the first six weeks. But during the second six weeks, they were to stick to a 1,200 calorie diet. Those who were given 5-HTP lost just over four pounds during the first phase, but nearly 12 pounds during the second phase. But those who had been given a placebo only lost less than one pound during the first phase and almost two pounds at the end of the second phase.

Participants on 5-HTP ALL said they felt satisfied during the first phase, with 90% of them reporting the same during the second phase. This suggests that those who were given 5-HTP were able to stick to the low-calorie diet much easier, because they felt satisfied and full earlier. But those who were given the placebo did not and could not stick to the diet.

Throughout all the research so far, there have not been any serious side effects reported. 5-HTP is something that is naturally produced and found in your body, so it makes sense. However, it’s important to note that using it for weight loss, you should use for up to 12 weeks at a time in order to improve and balance the levels of serotonin in the brain.
